If you have been comparing Mandarin schools in Singapore, you have probably seen the promise: HSK 4 in 6 months. Here is the honest version of that timeline, with the variables most marketing pages skip.

The standard adult learner timeline

For a complete beginner adult learner committing 4 hours of class per week plus 1 hour of self-study per day, HSK 4 is realistic in 8 to 10 months. HSK 4 requires active mastery of 1200 words, listening at near-native speed, and paragraph-level reading.

Skip any one of those components and the timeline stretches. Skip the initial diagnostic and it stretches further because foundation gaps remain invisible until they cause plateau later.

When 6 months is actually possible

Profile factors that compress the timeline: prior tonal language exposure (Cantonese, Hokkien, Vietnamese), at least 6 dedicated study hours per week, intensive class format of 8+ class hours per week, and consistent daily listening exposure.

For a regular working adult without these factors, 8 to 10 months produces a more solid foundation. The certificate looks the same on paper. The real Mandarin behind it is different.

Three questions to ask any school

How many class hours per week. How many homework hours per week. What student profile typically completes HSK 4 in the timeline you quote. If the answers are vague or refer to outliers, the timeline is marketing, not a benchmark.

At MMC, our standard adult learner track reaches HSK 4 in 8 months. Intensive learners with flexible schedules can compress this further. The point is to know your variables before signing up, not after.
